Caring for Creation – July 4th and 5th

DAILY LIVING PRACTICES TO CARE FOR CREATON

During July and August we focus on the importance of fire/sun/energy in our Caring for Creation activities. Simultaneously, the season of Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit blows where it will.  The Spirit sustains all that is true, good and beautiful wherever it may be found and by whomever it may be done. Traditional representations of the disciples on Pentecost show them with tongues of flame above their heads indicating their internal change and sense of purpose.

Quotation for your Meditation

“We all travel the Milky Way together, trees and people, but it never occurred to me until this storm-day, while swinging in the wind, that trees are travelers in the ordinary sense.  They make many journeys, not extensive ones, it is true, but our own little journeys, away and back again, are only little more than tree wavings – many of them not so much.  When the storm began to abate, I dismounted and sauntered down through the calming woods.  The storm-tones died away, and turning toward the east, I beheld the countless hosts of the forests hushed and tranquil, towering above one another on the slopes of the hills like a devout audience.  The setting sun filled them with amber light, and seemed to say, while they listened, “My peace I give unto you.”

Suggestions for Personal Action

Unable to go solar at this point?  Your current electric company is required by law to provide you with alternative sources of electricity that include suppliers that are 100% renewable (solar, wind, hydro).  80% of the electricity consumed in Massachusetts currently comes from fossil fuel sources. Anyone who pays an electric bill, including renters, can buy clean electricity.

Specifically, here on Cape Cod, the Cape Light Compact (CLC) as the local arm of Mass Save, administers this program.  CLC offers a power supply option for those that want to support local, New England-based renewable energy resources, including resources located on Cape Cod.  Go to this website *(https://www.capelightcompact.org/clcgreen/) for more detailed information.

If you live elsewhere in Massachusetts you can still support the production and supply of renewable energy.  Evaluate the options at this website *(https://www.energyswitchma.gov/#/about/renewableenergy). You can then sign up for 50% or 100% of your electric usage to be based on renewable sources.
